SWBBA, GVIBA Forum Partnership |
Congrats to GVIBA (Greater Valley Independent Business Alliance) for last niight's Main Street Forum. It was professionally planned and presented, and very informative - sorry more of our members were unable to attend. Membership in SWBBA automatically makes you a member of GVIBA, and provides access to GVIBA events such as last evening's forum, as well as other happenings within the Luzerne Merchants Assn., Kingston Area Merchants & Professional Assn., and the Back Mountain Business Assn. All of these alliances have had growing pains and, like us, they did not give up. Main Street (as local businesses are referred to in this group) is the engine that drives each community. We are all therefore encouraged to buy local and support independent businesses in our community, and to also support local business groups and the community events they host. When times are tough and bills are due, we are not the recipients of government bail outs, but all of us working together to support our local business commuities will make it happen... Many of our members are featured in the new issue of Independent Magazine, and this is a very impressive issue. Please contact me if you are not receiving it, and I will deliver one to you. Support SWBBA and plan on attending our meetings. Your voice is needed and appreciated... Pat |

SWBBA Cleans Up Carey Ave |
There are those that talk about cleaning up the area, and there are those that pick up a shovel and do something about it. That was the case this past week when the members of the SWBBA go together to clean up a section of Carey Avenue. Another positive sign of how much can be accomplished when individuals combine their efforts.
A Message from the President Carey Avenue looks sensational - thank you to all the volunteers who came out and worked HARD - it wasn't easy - but our efforts were noticed. I have received several phone calls and many comments from residents who noticed what we were doing and wanted to thank our group. My personal thank you to Bob Hogan, Jim O'Connell, Angela Rackleff, Brian and Marcy O'Donnell and their team, Lonnie Truskowski and his wife and son, Miriam and Joe Sable, Joe Castrignano (prospective new member), and Rick - I hope I got you all - you all went above and beyond and your efforts paid off - the City picked up our bags and piles this afternoon and the street looks great - we should be on WYOU news this evening and maybe WBRE as well - again, thank you all for your efforts... Meet the Candidate Night A Success |
Another successful “Meet the Candidate” Night was held by the SWBBA. Questions submitted by the audience were presented to the panel by Moderator Sue Barre of WKRZ’s Rocky and Sue radio show. Mayor Thomas Leighton and Wilkes Barre City Council candidate, Rick Cronauer, chose to not participate. But lively and informative discussions of the issues were presented by Wilkes Barre Mayoral candidate, Linda Stets, and Wilkes Barre District “ A” City Council candidate, Walter Griffith, Jr. |

The South Wilkes Barre Business Alliance is currently in the process of developing a "Clean Up the Neighborhood" Trash Can program. Businesses throughout the South Wilkes-Barre area will be proudly displaying the trash cans in front of their businesses. Students from Myers High School will be assisting in painting and placing decals on the cans. Our aim is to send a visible message to the community that there is united support for positive change in the area. If you are interested in placing and maintaining a trash can in front of your business, you can contact Pat Gazenski at
